What is the extent of inequality in Africa? This comparative study of five African countries focuses on inequalities of income, land, education and health. Analysis of both cross-sectional and longitudinal inequality confirms the existence of wide disparities in Ghana, Uganda, Ivory Coast, Guinea and Madagascar. Other findings from the study indicate that:
  • causes of inequality differ considerably from one country to the next
  • social mobility is inversely related to levels of inequality
  • disparities between agricultural and non-agricultural income accentuate broader inequality
  • unequal distribution of education combined with high returns to education reinforce this wide income gap
