This action paper calls on policy makers to improve the quality of life of girls and young women forced into child marriages. The particular needs of child brides are documented and the nature of the economic and social factors that reinforce the practice are outlined. Advocating a child protection framework, the priority areas for policy and programme development outlined in the paper include:
- promoting the right to education for all children - introducing scholarships and other incentives to encourage female inclusion
- improving support for girls who escape child marriages through the creation of safety nets
- ensuring that child brides living with HIV are able to access new technologies for care and treatment - in addition to securing access to reproductive and maternal health services
- supporting grassroots advocacy that targets males within the community
- encouraging families and communities to delay their children's marriage, and document and share community-based individual and collective interventions to end child marriage.
